I agree, bleaching won't work. Further bleaching wasn't among my options 1. to 5.
But can you please explain, why dark blue or black dye will not work
(Any other color won't, I agree.)
Will the scribbling shine through even black dye
After all, dark dye + clear coats would look better in this case than plain paint, IMO.
Dyed wood still looks like wood, painted wood looks like plastics.
You want to bleach the dye out, not the wood, although that may sound confusing, it is what you're trying to do.
Yeah, that's why I tried chlorine, not the drain cleaners.
Otherwise, just clearcoat it as-is is about the only other option, although personally I wouldn't do that, that's a lot of time and trouble and effort to get a result you're not going to like much.
Again, I agree. My option # 1. was there just because it was suggested by my son. He immediately recognised the scribblings as names of PC games. "GTA", "Vice city", "San Andreas", "GTA3", so he symphatized.
If you're down to 1mm, in spots, you don't even have enough wood left to stain, the stain will probably splotch on you, you may get it on the sides, and you won't get that back out.
The whole top veneer is less than 1 mm, not just in spots.
Yes, the sides
At least I'll start with a couple of clear coats on the sides before bringing anything colored anywhere near the thing.
Oh, one thing
The binding is white-black-white-black (from outside in).
The last black line will be "wasted" with a black finish.
But oh well, that's life
